Shawn McIntosh taught digital media and journalism courses and was student media advisor for the student-run newspapers and television studios at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) in Massachusetts. He taught strategic communications, media ethics, and digital media in the strategic communications master’s program at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies for several years. McIntosh worked as a journalist and editor in London and then Tokyo for nearly a decade, writing for newspapers and magazines in the UK, Japan, and the US, and publishing a travel magazine in Tokyo.

Research Interests
Research interests include journalism's role in democracy, the role of digital technologies in journalism practices and production, journalism and its relationship to the public, and new and emerging models of journalism and journalism business practices.
Current Research Activities/Projects
Main research activities and projects in Fall 2026 include co-editing a white paper on the current state of the Armenian information space, leading solutions journalism training initiatives through the Center for Excellence in Journalism, and presenting papers at two international conferences, one about how Armenian media frames discourses on preserving cultural heritage sites, and the other on how journalism schools can best prepare students for a world in which AI is rapidly changing the journalism profession.
