Matthew Genasci is a lawyer and consultant focusing on extractive sector law and policy, with a specific emphasis on mining and petroleum taxation regimes. Before starting Mining Policy Group, Matthew headed the legal and economics team at the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) in New York, a leading policy institute focused on the unique challenges commonly faced by resource-rich developing countries. He has a strong and varied background in tax law and policy, having served previously as international tax counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance and worked as an attorney in a top Washington D.C. law firm specializing in transactional tax planning and structured finance. Since starting Mining Policy Group, Matthew has worked with a number of government committees and renegotiation teams, advising on legislative and policy reforms, several mining contract negotiations, and the design and implementation of a major mineral rights tender. He has also worked with international NGOs, research institutes and development agencies on a variety of research and training projects.
