Artur Simonyan is Assistant Professor of International Law at the American University of Armenia. His research and teaching examine international law from historical, theoretical, regional, and critical perspectives, with a focus on the history and theory of international law, regional international law, Russian and Eurasian approaches to international law, geojurisprudence, and critical legal studies.
Before joining AUA, Prof. Simonyan was Principal Investigator of the DFG-funded project “Rediscovering Peripheral Histories of International Law: The Armenian Case” at the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies, supported by the DFG Walter Benjamin Programme. He previously served as a senior fellow at the Berlin-Potsdam Research Group “The International Rule of Law - Rise or Decline?” at Freie Universität Berlin. He has taught international law, the history and theory of international law, and Eurasian integration law at the University of Tartu School of Law, the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies, the University of Regensburg, Yerevan State University, and the French University in Armenia, and has held visiting research positions at IOS Regensburg and the École de droit de la Sorbonne.
His scholarship has appeared in leading journals, including the European Journal of International Law, Asian Journal of International Law, Chinese Journal of International Law, Hague Yearbook of International Law, and Michigan State International Law Review. His monograph, Development of Regional International Law: Lessons from Russia and Eurasia, is forthcoming with Routledge in 2026. He is also co-editor, with Lucia Leontiev, of Territory and Territoriality in Eurasia: Law and Geopolitics, forthcoming with Edward Elgar in 2027.
He holds a PhD in Law and a Master of Social Science from the University of Tartu and completed graduate exchange studies at Sciences Po Paris School of International Affairs.
