Alexander (Alex) Agadjanian was born in Moscow and obtained his PhD in history in the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences (the Institute was founded in the 19th century as Lazarev Institute by a prominent Armenian family). Alex has then worked as researcher in the same institution before he joined Arizona State University where he spent a few years at the Department of Religious Studies as an adjunct lecturer. In 2003-2022 he was Professor and Director of the Masters’ Program at the Center for the Study of Religion at the Russian State University for the Humanities. Since 2022, he moved to Yerevan and joined the Yerevan State University as a leading research fellow. He participated in a few international projects related to the study of religious traditions’ impact on modern societies, with focus first on Southeast Asian field, and later, the societies of Russia and the South Caucasus. His current research is on comparative study of political and cultural history of the former Soviet area.
